Balanced, effortless natural human motion
Sedentary Sitting Causes Pain
Experts agree, the body needs motion to stay healthy. Unfortunately, we are becoming more sedentary every year as we spend hours sitting in our chairs for work, for play and in our cars. It’s not surprising that according to a recently published study, lower back pain has become the leading cause of disability worldwide.
Solving the Problem Using Natural Motion
SmartMotion Ergonomics saw this challenge and was determined to take it head on — how to build a chair that incorporates Natural Human Motion, so the user can be focused and productive instead of fighting pain.
The unique patented technology used in the Swingchair dynamically counterbalances the user, enabling him/her to effortlessly move through a full range of motions throughout the day, without touching one control. The Swingchair is designed to comfortably support the legs, hips and back, so that the user can concentrate on their desired tasks – pain free.
The chair of the future will reduce fatigue, pain & injury by enabling and guiding natural human movement
At the keynote speech of the National Ergonomics Conference & Ergo Expo held in Las Vegas in 2011, the Swingchair was used as the primary example of “correct thinking” about the science proven necessary to support peak back health for those of us who sit for many hours of the day.
There are many documented facts about the science of spinal back health and optimal human posture by medical, chiropractic and certified ergonomic professionals.
ANSI (American National Standards Institute) has an authenticated technical path of motion specifications, under the HFES-100 standards, that are required to achieve the certified science of optimal back health.
According to ANSI, the natural pivot point (or Centre of Rotation “CR1”), which is the optimal position for the spine to be positioned in for healthy ‘seated posture’ is illustrated in the arc above. The Swingchair has been specially engineered to emulate these technical specifications.
The Swingchair was designed on the principle of Unrestricted Human Motion
Unrestricted Motion
The Swingchair offers true counterbalanced motion. Where other chairs have springs which attempt to counterbalance the weight of the seated user, SmartMotion mechanisms position the center of movement of the chair proximate to the user’s center of gravity. Like a pendulum, when your center of gravity shifts, the Swingchair rotates the position of the seat and backrest to maintain proper support.
Natural Human Motion
According to Kinesiology, the human body has certain natural motions. For example, the legs, hips and back work together to allow the pivotal motion that enables us to walk, swim and dance. This motion is called lumbopelvic rhythm. Only the Swingchair allows lumbo-pelvic rhythm and provides wonderful support to each user’s legs, hips and back as they effortlessly move through the full range of ANSI-recommended seated postures.
The ONLY office chair on the planet incorporating all ANSI-HFES 100 recommended postures vital to perfect back health
Sitting still all day is not a Smart idea…
Many jobs involve sitting still for long hours working on computers and in sedentary jobs. We are hearing more and more about the so called “Sitting disease” and the lack of activity whilst sitting for long periods of time has been described as the “new smoking.
The health benefits of standing desks are becoming more widely documented with medical institutes like the Mayo Clinic in the USA conducting extensive research into this area.
The British Journal of Sport Medicine also released a document in June 2015 on Sedentary Workplaces and their feedback was that we should be standing a minimum of 2-4 hours per day, preferably in smaller periods scattered throughout the day.
“For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking”
Martha Grogan, cardiologist, Mayo Clinic
“Prolonged sitting should be considered within occupational health and safety policies and practices just like other elements of posture”
British Journal of Sports Medicine
“Today, our bodies are breaking down from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, depression, and the cascade of health ills and everyday malaise that come from what scientists have named sitting disease.”
James Levine, MD, PhD
